Trampa Mayu Project

Trampa Mayu is a small community with a handful of houses, a soccer field, and a primary school at its center, and the rest of its population dispersed in surrounding farmland. It has a relatively warm climate, and is part of a productive agricultural zone. It sits less than a kilometer from a well-maintained dirt road with public transportation to Villa Serrano, which is just roughly twenty minutes away by car. Older students go to Villa Serrano for secondary education, and the town also has a health center, a small university satellite campus, a teacher training university, markets for selling farm produce, government offices, and onward transportation to Sucre.

PROJECT

There is a river between the community of Trampa Mayu and the road, which floods frequently during the rainy season, five to six months every year. When waters rise, primary school students living on the east side of the river can’t reach class, and community members living on the west side of the river lose access to amenities in Villa Serrano. If floods last more than a few days, farmers may face the risk of their crops spoiling before they are sold, while simultaneously unable to travel to larger population centers to find work.

IMPACT

This project will provide the community of Trampa Mayu with safe year-round access to education, health care, markets, employment, and government representation.
