Río Caine Project
Tipa K’asa and the neighboring communities of Yunguillas, Palla Palla, Alcari, Thagoni, Punta Aguada, Pucara, and Poma K’asa form an isolated rural area with a warm climate on the west side of Río Caine, a major river that defines the boundary between the departments of Potosí and Cochabamba. The population is dispersed over a wide area, and most people work in agriculture and in nearby mines.

PROJECT
Mountains render travel further west very difficult, so community members must cross the river to the larger town of Minas Asientos, in the department of Cochabamba, to access healthcare, secondary education, markets to sell farm goods, mining jobs, and transportation to larger cities. Waters in Río Caine flow heavily and consistently for most of the year, and except for a few months during the dry season, the only way to cross is by an aging cable car pulled hand-over-hand more than 100 meters across the river. The safety of this cable car system is questionable at best, and makes crossing by the young or elderly and the transportation of farm goods to market nearly impossible.
IMPACT
This project will provide more than two thousand people in Tipa K’asa and surrounding communities with safe year-round access to education, health care, markets, employment, government representation, and travel.
