Llavi Mayu Project

K’apaj Rancho is a high-altitude community whose residents work in nearby mines and farm sheep, llamas, potatoes, wheat, and other crops that can withstand the area’s harsh climate. Most of the population lives in a small village, which is separated by a river from a broad area of flat farmland and a well-maintained dirt road. That road in turn provides access to a secondary school and health post in the nearby town of Tubería, as well as transportation to Pocoata, Sucre, and Oruro. During the rainy season, the river floods often. Waters rise quickly and unpredictably, cutting off access to education and health care and leaving residents unable to reach farms and work opportunities.

PROJECT

Thanks to the generous support of Fortis and their incredible team, a critical infrastructure project was recently completed. In cooperation with municipal representatives and the beneficiary population, a suspended footbridge was built across the Llavi Mayu river, spanning an impressive 108 meters. This new bridge will transform daily life for the community, ensuring safe passage for pedestrians, motorcycles, wheelbarrows, and even livestock. This collaboration between Fortis, local authorities, and the community demonstrates the power of partnership in building a brighter future.

IMPACT

This project is now providing the community of K’apaj Rancho with safe year-round access to education, health care, markets, employment, and government representation.
