Castilla Mayu Project

The proposed bridge spanning the Castilla Mayu river will serve as a key link between several smaller communities (including the aforementioned Wenqayalla, Jachacalla, Alcalaca communities in addition to others) to the larger Toracari community. The Toracari community is the most heavily populated within the region and, as a result, possesses many resources including health centers, a primary and secondary school, and access to means of transportation that enable people to reach larger urban centers.  The people that inhabit smaller communities north and west of the Toracari community will greatly benefit from consistent access to those resources.

Unfortunately, current access to these resources is not consistent due to seasonal flooding of the Castilla Mayu river. In fact, crossing conditions are limited 150 days out of the year.

PROJECT

The main purpose of this proposed bridge is connecting the larger Toracari community to the smaller communities that surround it and rely on it for resources. The Toracari community is about 0.2 km from the proposed bridge site and features centers for education, health, and transportation to locations such as the closest market (155 km away) and Cochabomba, the largest urban center located 6 hours away by vehicle. Surrounding communities vary in distance but will all benefit from consistent access to the Toracari community.

IMPACT

As the primary method of crossing this river is by foot, individuals that inhabit smaller communities surrounding the Toracari region must put themselves in danger in order to reach necessary resources such as healthcare and education. Current estimates suggest that construction of this bridge will provide safe, year-round access across the river for 605 individuals, including 20 children.
